Tantra for many years was overshadowed because of the more familiar reiki teachings, but it was only recently when certain celebrities came forward and professed their undertaking in tantric rituals it came to the fore. The downside with this publicity however, was that numerous people considered tantra as being solely based on intimacy, and wrongly assumed it was subsequently the same as the kamasutra teachings.
In reality tantra has many similarities to yoga or Zen, because it is considered a route to enlightenment both spiritually and physically. Coming from India over 4,000 years back it could hardly be considered a new concept, though it may be now very prevalent as we say in western society.
The standard concept of tantra will be to enable you to realise your full potential as a person, throughout the body and mind. This may not be easy, especially considering the fact that tantra is assumed of even now as some form of mystical subject which is difficult to define. In the event a poll were conducted today, the main response about understanding of this subject would be the sexual aspect. Unsurprising really when you consider the publicity it really has generated.
If I was to say it was a concept that unites the universal energies in the mind, body, spirit and soul it wouldn’t be much clearer within our minds. A less complicated option is to explain tantra as the letting go of all previous mental, emotional and physical or cultural conditioning we have now allowed ourselves to become burdened with. In turn we allow new life energies or thoughts and practises to circulate through our minds and bodies. To realize this state, we require to undertake meditation, exercises, rituals, dream awareness and our sexuality. To put it briefly all activities regarding the use of our minds and bodies. These are done in a unique way allowing us to start to be enlightened and learn from the erring of our past and move into an exquisite new future.
Many consider tantra in its purest form to be about enjoyment and pleasure; others love the reality that it builds self esteem and create a sense of contentment inside a person, which in turn enables people to not simply love and feel better around themselves, but to also feel like this towards others. As you can tell tantra seriously isn't all about sex, but about all of your life’s experiences and just how you are able to express these. The extra bonus needless to say will probably be your sex life will improve, dramatically I would add.
The uniqueness of tantra, is that it is definitely the only spiritual practise that actually states sex is sacred, not a sin, even outside of marriage. It actually promotes lovemaking as being extremely beneficial, not only in terms of the exercise, but more with regards to the spiritual connection that 2 people might make with one another. A lot of people who have made use of the tantra teachings have publicly stated how much stronger their relationship has grown to be; some even profess it saved theirs.
